Upon his return to the United States in 1998, Shihan Abbott began teaching the military sword program he learned in Japan. LearnTheSword.com allows Shihan Abbott to take that sword program and teach it to students worldwide. Learn The Sword is a very comprehensive, easily accessed Toyama-Ryu Iai-Batto-Do (draw, cut and sheath) online tutorial. This Tachi-Iai training and ranking tutorial offers 10 hours of secure HD video instruction on the Japanese Military sword style called Toyama-Ryu, taught in Japan until the end of World War 2. This is a very practical and efficient style.  All the cutting techniques and kata-forms are performed while standing.

To make your LearnTheSword.com online training experience simple and straight forward, Shihan Abbott has developed his “Cyber Sensei“ persona. “Cyber Sensei” is superimposed into the student’s progress video to work with the student. Students are asked to Dropbox their progress video’s to Shihan Abbott and after “Cyber Sensei” has made suggestions, students will receive a unlisted link to their progress video which has been uploaded to the Learn The Sword YouTube Channel.

In addition to online training, students can also travel to Shihan Abbott’s Samurai Sports Training Center in Arizona to take intensive courses in Tachi-iai: Toyama-Ryu Iai Batto Do Japanese Swordsmanship.  Students can also purchase course materials before attending an intensive course, and reference materials after an intensive course.
